Best Way to Reach Munnar from Cochin

The best way to reach Munnar from Cochin is by private cab or airport taxi via the NH85 route (Kochi → Kothamangalam → Adimali → Munnar). It covers about 110 km from Cochin airport / 130 km from Kochi city and takes 3.5 to 4.5 hours. A cab costs roughly ₹3,000–4,500 one-way; the budget option is a KSRTC bus from ₹190–300 (about 4–5 hours). Munnar has no railway station, so the nearest stations are Aluva and Ernakulam, followed by road.

Every guest who checks in with us has just done this drive — and how they did it usually decides what kind of mood they arrive in. Do it right and the road is the holiday: waterfalls, spice forests, and that first cool breath of mountain air. Do it wrong and you're carsick in the dark on a hairpin bend. So here's exactly how we tell our own guests to travel from Cochin to Munnar.

First, the distance (it depends where you start)

  • Cochin International Airport (COK, Nedumbassery): ~110 km → 3.5–4 hours

  • Kochi city / Ernakulam: ~130 km → 4–4.5 hours

Don't panic at "only 110 km taking 4 hours." The first half is fast highway; the second half is a gorgeous, slow climb through the Western Ghats where you want to go slow.

Our recommendation: for most travellers — especially families and honeymooners — a private cab or a pre-arranged resort pickup via NH85 is the clear best way. You get door-to-door comfort, space for bags, and the freedom to stop for photos. Bus is genuinely fine if you're solo and counting rupees.

The route we actually recommend (NH85)

Kochi/Aluva → Perumbavoor → Kothamangalam → Neriamangalam → Adimali → Munnar.
This is the smoothest, most scenic line and the one Google Maps favours. Avoid experimenting with shortcuts through the interior — they look shorter and end up slower and rougher.

Break the drive at these stops

The stretch after Adimali is where the magic starts. Tell your driver you want to pause at:

Cheeyappara Waterfalls – roaring seven-step falls right off the highway

Valara Waterfalls – a little further up, quieter

Karadippara View Point – your first big valley panorama

Spice & tea stalls near Adimali – fresh cardamom, pepper and hot chai

These add ~45 minutes and turn a transfer into a memory.

By bus, step by step

Head to Aluva or Ernakulam (Vyttila Mobility Hub / KSRTC stand) and take a KSRTC bus to Munnar (some direct, some via Adimali). Fares start around ₹190; buy online or at the counter. Go in daylight — the ghat section after dark isn't fun standing in a bus.

Why train alone won't work

Munnar has no railway station. The nearest are Aluva and Ernakulam Junction, and from there you still need a 3.5–4 hour cab or bus. Trains only make sense if you're arriving into Kerala by rail anyway.

Safety & timing

  • Leave early. Aim to start from Cochin by 9–10 am so you clear the ghats in daylight.

  • Ghat roads are winding — if you're prone to motion sickness, sit in front and carry medication.

  • Monsoon (June–Sept): beautiful but slippery with occasional landslips; travel by day and keep buffer time.

  • Fuel up before Adimali; petrol stations thin out as you climb.

If you'd rather skip the planning, we arrange airport pickups from Cochin for guests at Blanket Hotel & Spa, Munnar — a vetted driver who knows the road, a fixed fare, and a cool welcome drink waiting at the top. Sometimes the best way to reach Munnar is to let someone else drive while you just watch the hills roll by.
